International Civil Society

Discussion Group and Workshops

International and comparative third sector research is an underdeveloped field. Indeed, such research and practice as does exist assumes that Western (and in particular UK and American) models of third sector organisation are the way forward and applicable globally. The civil society development consultancy boom - which followed events in the USSR and Eastern Europe post 1989 - has reflected the extent to which these ideas have been exported. Yet there has been little parallel learning from the East and South to inform the sector here.

To explore this, TSRC and POLSIS (University of Birmingham) hosted an informal workshop in August 2009 to reflect on international third sector research and practice perspectives. Ideas for further events are being explored. We welcome any thoughts about issues or themes where international perspectives could benefit our learning in the UK.
