July 2020 Degree Congregations

All students should have received an email from the Vice-Chancellor confirming the postponement of our on-campus July 2020 Degree Congregations until March 2021 in light of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. This was a very difficult decision but one that has been made with the best interests of our students and staff in mind. We are delighted to confirm that, in addition to the replacement on-campus events due to be held in March 2021, we will also be running Virtual Graduation Celebrations in the week commencing Monday 27 July 2020 to mark the achievements of our Class of 2020 graduating cohort. December 2020 dates

Degree Congregations will take place between Tuesday 8 December and Friday 11 December 2020.

The specific date and time of each Degree Congregation will be confirmed at the end of October 2020.  We are only able to set specific dates once the deadline for students to reply has passed.  We guarantee a place to all students who confirm their attendance by this deadline.  Given the limited capacity of the Great Hall, we can only begin allocating specific dates once we know how many students wish to attend from each School/Department/programme.  Year on year we see an increasing number of students graduating, and an increasingly higher number of students wishing to attend their graduation in person, therefore to avoid not being able to accommodate all students wishing to attend we cannot accurately release dates before the end of October.

What happens next?

As soon as the the allocation of Schools and Colleges to Degree Congregations is approved it will be published on this webpage, so please keep an eye out for updates at the end of October.  Students who have confirmed their attendance at a Degree Congregation in December will be sent an email in November directing them to our website, which contains all of the information they will need to prepare for their Degree Congregation - including information about gown hire, tickets, ceremony dates, times, locations and commonly asked questions regarding the Degree Congregation itself.

We strongly advise all students to check the date and time of their Degree Congregation via my.bham.  To check the specific date and time of your Degree Congregation please log into the portal, click on the myProgress tab and then the Degree Congregations link.  Select your programme of study, click submit and the following screen will display the date and time of your Degree Congregation.

Force Majeure

Please note that, in the highly unlikely event of the University of Birmingham’s graduation ceremonies being cancelled, delayed or postponed due to circumstances beyond the control of the University, the University shall give as much notice as is reasonably practical to students of such cancellation, delay or postponement. The University will not be liable for any losses direct or otherwise incurred by students or their guests. Circumstances that would constitute a force majeure may include, but are not limited to: fire, flood, explosion or any other incident that renders the venue in which the Degree Congregation is due to be held unsafe to use; terrorist act (or threat of a terrorist act); natural disaster; pandemic; industrial action; or a period of national mourning.
