All graduands are required to wear the appropriate academic dress (robes, hood and hat) prescribed for their degree.
How to order
Academic dress should be hired or purchased from Ede and Ravenscroft, the University’s robe makers, either by visiting the Ede and Ravenscroft website or by calling +44 (0)1223 861 854.
When to order
You should order your academic dress as soon as possible. There is no need to wait for your final results before placing your order as orders can be cancelled or refunded in full if necessary. Orders for the ceremonies taking place in December 2018 must be placed by Friday 23 November 2018 at the latest.
What information will I need to give?
When ordering your academic dress you will need to confirm:
- The name of your instiution (please use 'The University of Birmingham')
- The date of your Degree Congregation
- The degree which you are receiving, eg PhD, MSc, BA
- Your head circumference
- Your chest and height measurements
- Your credit/debit card details
When ordering from Ede and Ravenscroft’s website please remember to print your order confirmation and bring it along on the day of your Degree Congregation. Failure to do so will result in a delay in collecting your robes.
Collecting your academic dress
You should collect your academic dress from the Gowning Area in the Avon Room, University Centre (building R23 on the campus map) on the day of your Degree Congregation.
What to wear for your Degree Congregation
As well as academic dress, all graduands are expected to wear formal attire for your Degree Congregation. Degree Congregations are formal occasions, therefore graduands and guests are requested to dress accordingly. Find out more about what to wear on the day.
