Degree Congregations are formal University occasions with a history dating back to the University's founding
The heritage of the academic dress worn by today's graduates dates back to medieval times. University Regulations state that those graduating should present themselves wearing the academic dress for the degree they are to be awarded.
The University of Birmingham has appointed Ede and Ravenscroft as its official academic dress supplier. Ede and Ravenscroft are a company that, like the University itself, prides itself on its strong environmental and ethical values - committing itself to sustainable business practices that aim to reduce negative environmental and social impacts as much as possible. This means that when you hire robes from Ede and Ravenscroft you do so knowing that they have been manufactured in a manner that minimises carbon emissions, maximises the use of sustainable materials and does not exploit sweatshop or slave labour.

What to wear for your Degree Congregation
Degree Congregations are formal occasions and graduands are expected to dress accordingly. Find out more about what to wear on the day.
Counterfeit robes are out of place at Degree Congregations owing to their poor quality and incorrect design. These gowns do not contain the standard embellishments, subtle differential markers or the University's crest. They are often manufactured in conditions that run directly counter to the University’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility, utilising sweatshop labour and manufactured with little to no regard for environmental issues. Students identified as wearing counterfeit robes will therefore not be allowed access to their Degree Congregation.
