What is the discount for the award?

The University of Birmingham Commonwealth Scholarship provides a £3,000 tuition fee discount for eligible students.

Once you have received an offer of admission for a taught Master’s degree and meet all the eligibility criteria, this discount is then applied automatically to your fees when you enrol on your programme of choice. You will therefore be asked to pay your fees with the discount already deducted.

Who is eligible?

In order to be eligible, candidates must meet the following requirements. You must:

Have applied for, and received an offer of admission for, a taught Masters degree at the University of Birmingham UK campus, to study in the 2022/23 academic year.

Be classed as ‘domiciled’ in one of the Commonwealth countries.

Be classed by the University as an overseas fee payer for tuition fee purposes.

Start your studies at the University in September/ October 2022 on a course delivered on-campus.

What does ‘domiciled’ mean?

Domicile means the country where you are habitually resident. It is not the same as nationality or citizenship.

In this context, being classed as ‘domiciled’ in one of the Commonwealth countries means you must be a habitual resident in one of the Commonwealth countries.

Are there any programmes not eligible?

If you decide to defer your programme start date to September 2023, you will no longer be eligible for this scholarship as it is only available for programmes with a September 2022 start date.

Students seeking to study on a course solely delivered as a ‘distance learning’ programme are not eligible for this scholarship.

Students applying for programmes in the Birmingham Business School are not eligible for this scholarship but are eligible for other separate MSc and MBA scholarships offered by the Business School.

Undergraduate degree programmes including the MBChB, MEng, MSci and MPharm undergraduate programmes are not eligible.

When will I hear that the scholarship has been confirmed?

There is no application process for this scholarship. If you meet the requirements you will receive the discount automatically upon enrolment on your chosen programme in September 2022.

How is the discount applied? Do I have to do an application?

To be considered for the scholarship and therefore, the discount, you will need to have made an application to your intended Masters programme and have received an offer of admission. If you have met the other criteria (see ‘who is eligible’ FAQ), the discount will be applied to your fees, after you have enrolled on your chosen programme.

Is there a deadline?

We recommend you apply as early as possible to your chosen programme.

To secure this scholarship candidates must have an unconditional offer, and have accepted this unconditional offer, by 31 August (23:59 UK time/ GMT+1). If candidates secure an unconditional offer after this, they will not be eligible for this scholarship.

Am I eligible if I already have a scholarship for my postgraduate programme?

Yes. This scholarship can be used in conjunction with another University-funded scholarship or other discount.

However, the scholarship cannot be in held in conjunction with a scholarship that provides a full 100% fee waiver / discount, provided by either the university or an external body.

Am I eligible if I have funding from anywhere else?

If you benefit from funding from an external organisation, you will still be eligible for the fee discount.

Am I eligible if I’m currently studying a Masters?

No, the scheme is not available to students already enrolled on a Masters-level taught programme.

I am a UK / EU student, does this scholarship apply to me?

No. This scholarship is specifically for students who are domiciled in Commonwealth countries, provided they meet the other eligibility criteria.

Note that this scholarship is not applicable to students domiciled in the UK.

Does the course have to be full-time or does a part-time programme also qualify?

Only full-time taught Masters programmes qualify.

Do courses delivered remotely (online) qualify?

No. Courses advertised as solely being delivered as a ‘distance’ or ‘remote learning’ programmes are not eligible for this scholarship.

The programme must be solely delivered on campus.

I’ve already applied for a taught Masters programme; is the scholarship still available to me?

If you have already applied to a programme, you must wait to receive an offer of admission.

If you receive an offer of admission for the programme, and meet the other eligibility criteria, the discount will be automatically applied to your fees.
