The Department of English Language and Linguistics is delighted to welcome participants of the 2019 UK Linguistics Olympiad.

The participants, from all over the country, will be solving a set of puzzles designed to test their aptitude for analysing languages. Language analysis lies at the heart of our research in the Department of English Language and Linguistics, whether that is lexis, grammar, discourse, sounds or signs, so it is particularly appropriate for us to host this event here in Birmingham.

This year we are particularly pleased to host a ‘mini-Olympiad’ for local schools alongside the main event. This is part of our extensive outreach activity. We hope it will encourage schools to take part in the Olympiad in future years.
