Peter Sinclair
Emeritus Professor Peter Sinclair

On Wednesday 14 October, the Department of Economics hosted the inaugural Peter Sinclair Town Hall lecture at the University of Birmingham. The lecture series is inspired by and commemorates Emeritus Professor Peter Sinclair, whose breadth of knowledge, curiosity, and kindness inspired his students and colleagues immeasurably.

The Department was delighted to invite award-winning economist, journalist and broadcaster Tim Harford as the first speaker of the Town Hall series. In a fascinating lecture entitled "How to make the world add up', Tim discussed the pitfalls and the cognitive tools we can use to think clearly about the economy and much more besides.

The lecture was introduced by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir David Eastwood, and chaired by Professor of Econometrics Anindya Banerjee. A lively Q&A session was held following Tim's talk which brought up some interesting points of discussion. The event was broadcast via Zoom to over 200 attendees, which included some of Peter Sinclair's loved ones, and was streamed live on the University's Facebook page.

The Department is looking forward to hosting the next instalment in this Town Hall series on 11 November, featuring Professor Diane Coyle from the University of Cambridge. Look out for more information on our website and social media soon.
