Six academics from across the College of Arts and Law have been awarded new AHRC funding totalling £1.1m.

The various research will involve academic and non-HEI collaborators from the UK and overseas. The grant wins include:

  • Dr Hazel Wilkinson (English Literature) won an Early Career Leadership Fellowship to complete work on a project entitled, ‘Compositor: Recovering the Grammar of Ornament’.
  • Dr Megan Cavell (English Literature) secured an Early Career Research Grant, to work with partners on ‘Group Identity and the Early Medieval Riddle Tradition’.
  • Dr Jonathan Boff  (History) will use his Early Career Leadership Fellowship to carry out work on ‘Blood and Treasure: The Social and Cultural History of Money during the First World War’.
  • Dr Victoria Flood (English Literature) won an Early Career Research Grant to work collaboratively on ‘Invisible Worlds: Place-Making, Augmented Reality, and Alderley Edge’.
  • Professor Sabine Lee (History) won a follow-on funding award, to carry out impact work on a project entitled, ‘In the Name of the Father: Otino Onywalo Ilum’ and Gerardo Ortega won funding under the joint AHRC-DFG scheme, to work with German partners on ‘From icon to abstraction in sign language: how iconicity shapes the lexicon in the visual modality’.
  • Professor Lyndsey Stonebridge (English) and Ben Warwick (Law) are co-Investigators on one of two AHRC Global Challenges Research Fund ‘Network Plus’ awards recently won by the University of Birmingham. The programme will be led by Heather Flowe from the College of Life and Environmental Sciences under the title, ‘Time for Rights/Rights for Time: Responding to the times of violence, conflict, and displacement’.
