10th August 2021

As Head of School, I want to be one of the first to congratulate and welcome you to the School of Computer Science. You are embarking on an exciting new chapter of your life and I hope you will seize every opportunity while being a student at the University of Birmingham.

After a challenging year, we all look forward to a return to a busy and vibrant campus. We’ve all been working hard to prepare teaching materials that will support your learning both online and in-person. We are particularly keen to ensure that you have good opportunities for activities on campus, especially socially-distanced interactive labs, but understand that this may not always be possible and we have made plans for you to engage with these activities remotely should this be required.

All semester one modules will be taught bi-modally. This means that lectures are pre-recorded in short sections that you can engage with weekly as part of your own private study followed by live interactive tutorial sessions to enable you to understand and apply your knowledge. In addition, there will be a number of interactive laboratory sessions to help support your learning, as well as regular personal academic tutorials. For those of you that aren’t able to join us on campus at the start of the semester, we will be providing you with opportunities to engage with the course online.

In addition to your education, I hope you will make new and lasting friendships at Birmingham. I am proud of our friendly and open community and I look forward to meeting you in September.

Yours faithfully,
