In the first LANS core module, students collaborate in multidisciplinary groups on a local social issue, interview stakeholders, and produce a research report.
Even though groups have not met in-person this year, the quality of the reports is the best we’ve seen. We’re very proud that the Forum for Global Challenges would like to publish all of the reports. This ties in with the Forum held in Birmingham in 2022, which will bring researchers and policymakers together to address complex, real-world problems. The Forum is intended to coincide with the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Birmingham in the summer of 2022, and of which the University is an official partner.
In the second semester, students work in the same groups and campaign for a solution to the problem they researched in semester one. If you’d like to see their campaigns, please look at our Instagram page.
The University of Birmingham has changed its teaching year from three terms to two semesters. This puts the exam period after each semester rather than in the summer term, which means that students taking exams can do so while course content is still fresh in their minds. We are, therefore, two-thirds of the way through our second semester and have now paused for the Easter break. Our next email and hub page update will take place in two weeks.
