An Inaugural Lecture and Launch of the new Department of Sport Pedagogy by Professor Kathleen Armour, Professor of Education and Sport, School of Education, College of Social Sciences.

Tuesday, 24 May 2011 at 5:15 p.m.

To be followed by a buffet and drinks reception at approximately 6:00 p.m.

Sports participants are not always served well by the professional structures that exist to support them. In the case of children and young people, it can be argued that a degree of pedagogical dissonance results in physical education/sport provision that fails to meet diverse learning needs. There can be little doubt that this failure contributes to low levels of lifelong engagement.

This lecture will introduce the academic discipline of ‘sport pedagogy’ and also the newest department in the university. It will be argued that knowledge and research in sport pedagogy are vital links in the quest to increase and sustain participation in sport/physical activity for lifelong health and well being, personal challenge, social and civic engagement…and sheer enjoyment.
