Careers advisers from across the country will meet today at the University of Birmingham’s Careers and Admissions Conference.

Attending will be around 170 delegates who are involved in advising their students on Higher Education, including Heads of Careers, Heads of Sixth Forms as well as teachers from across state and independent secondary schools. Also, Personal Advisers from Connexions Services, who go into schools and colleges offering careers advice.

The aim of the event is to up-date delegates with information on admissions to Higher Education and to advise on the courses available at the University of Birmingham.

The University’s Director of Admissions, Roderick Smith, will chair a forum where attendees will have the opportunity to ask Admissions Tutors from a range of subject areas across the University, questions on the details of their subject, what studying it involves and what their graduates go on to do.

There will also be the opportunity for first hand advice on what they look for in a personal statement and why students should take their course at Birmingham.

Delegates will then be able to attend workshops covering areas such as ‘Applying for Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences’ to ‘The Changing role of Modern Languages in Higher Education’. Highlights include ‘Demystifying Computer Science’ where tutors will receive an insight into exactly what Computer Science is all about and a session on ‘Student Finance’, particularly relevant with the advent of top up fees.

There will be tips for helping students to write their personal statements and a student panel will answer questions about the courses they are studying and what it means to be a student at the University of Birmingham.

Director of Recruitment Liz Murphy says: “This is a great opportunity for those who are involved in advising students applying to university to get up to date information about changes in higher education and to find out more about what the University of Birmingham has to offer.”
