Academics at the University of Birmingham are strengthening their links to Brazil with the launch of a new initiative to encourage more research and education partnerships.

The Birmingham Brazil Forum creates a ‘virtual’ platform to support the University’s collaborations with Brazil, which already include fields such as energy, healthcare and environmental sciences.

His Excellency Fred Arruda, Brazilian Ambassador to the UK, launched the new Forum at a special networking event in London, attended by representatives from diplomacy, industry and academia in both countries.

The Forum will help to maintain the University’s profile in Brazil, organising a range of academic and cultural events in the UK and Brazil.

Ambassador Arruda said, “The ‘Birmingham Brazil Forum’ is an extremely welcome initiative. It will enable more people to engage and learn about Birmingham’s collaborations with Brazilian counterparts and about Brazil itself. It is yet another good reason for us to celebrate our special partnership with the University of Birmingham and, in a broader sense, bilateral academic cooperation between Brazil and the UK.”

Professor Robin Mason, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) at the University of Birmingham said: “The Birmingham Brazil Forum provides an excellent way to strengthen our existing partnerships in Brazil, while creating new and exciting opportunities for engagement and collaboration with the country’s top academic and corporate partners.

“As a global ‘civic’ university, we have a responsibility to enrich the lives of people in our home city and the wider world. Whether it be energy storage, sustainable cities or immunology and infection, we are working with our Brazilian partners to use our combined research strengths to seek answers to some of the most challenging questions of the 21st Century.”

He added that the University’s signature Brazil Visiting Fellows Scheme, and collaborative research funding scheme with FAPESP, both of which open for the next round of calls in Autumn 2019, would provide further opportunities for collaboration.

The event also provided an opportunity to showcase the University’s current group of Brazil Visiting Fellows , leading early career researchers from a number of Brazilian institutions who are working with colleagues from the University of Birmingham on a range of projects, such as gender based violence, nanotoxicity, second language acquisition, and cancer studies.

The University of Birmingham has more than 70 researchers engaged in partnerships with top Brazilian universities. It has particularly strong links with institutions in the Sao Paulo region, including Sao Paulo State University (UNESP), University of Campinas (UNICAMP), University of Sao Paulo (USP) and the Federal University of ABC (UFABC).
