University Supports Insider Midlands Sustainable Business Conference

Keen to ensure that our world class research continues to innovate in the business space, University of Birmingham Business Engagement are supporting the Insider Midlands Sustainable Business Conference being held on Tuesday 7th of September. Follow the event proceedings on Twitter using #InsiderSustainable.

The event will call on numerous industry experts and give insight into the ways in which businesses can go green in terms of tangible steps and how this will impact competitiveness for corporates as well as the real world differences made in fighting the global climate crisis and the moral implications for businesses moving forward.

Professor Clive Roberts, Head of the School of Engineering, will join the panel on Sustainable Transport. Professor Roberts’ research is world leading and covers all aspects of railway systems including the design of trains themselves and the logistic infrastructure supporting them. This work looks into improving the reliability, sustainability and overall performance of railways. The research is global in scope, he is a member of the Technical Advisory Panel to the Board of SMRT in Singapore and is a Technical Advisor to the Guangzhou Metro in China. Domestically his work has significant impact to the UK Technical Rail Strategy as a member of the Advisory Board for the UK’s Technical Leadership Group.

Transport accounts for roughly a quarter of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. The Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education at the University of Birmingham has provided many decarbonising solutions for the UK’s railways, among these is the application of hydrogen fuel cell technology as an effective alternative to diesel engines for a potentially entirely carbon neutral next generation of rail vehicles. This ground breaking work, done in collaboration with Porterbrook, has lead to the University of Birmingham winning the Guardian University Award for ‘Business Collaboration of the Year’ in 2020 and will be a key showcase feature at the COP26 International Climate Conference in Glasgow.

As one of the leading research institutions in the world with a multitude of areas of expertise the University of Birmingham is keen to highlight the opportunities available to partner with us in innovative research across products, services and processes.
