Birmingham researchers respond to challenges set out in the Industrial Strategy
At the University of Birmingham, we have been working with partners and policy-makers on the development of the UK’s Industrial Strategy for the past 12 months.
We have welcomed a strong dialogue with government – indeed, in recent months, the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), Greg Clark, chose the University as a place to make major industrial strategy announcements, having given a keynote speech on Industrial Strategy launching investment into battery technology and launching the Life Sciences Industrial Strategy here alongside the Secretary of State for Health. We have also discussed implications of the Industrial Strategy with our collaborators in industry, which covers everyone from KPMG and Lloyds Banking Group to Mondelez, GSK and the Energy Systems Catapult.
In reality though, we have been working with our partners on the themes and challenges presented in the Industrial Strategy for years, but today’s announcements (and those around the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund) are an excellent statement of intent and support from BEIS.
Over the next few days we will be promoting a number of short articles from University of Birmingham academics along with contributions from industry, exploring key themes for the Industrial Strategy, and some of those we feel are of critical importance to improving UK productivity and economic growth but may not be as visible in the White Paper. These articles will cover skills and inclusive growth; the UK Space Industry and Quantum Technology; Clean Growth and Sustainable Energy; Industry 4.0; and innovation in the UK Food Industry.
Universities are exceptionally well placed to take a holistic approach to the delivery of the Industrial Strategy and can bring together industry partners as well as stakeholders from city, regional, national and international levels to harness and commercialise research capability to drive the UK economy. Moreover, it is important that the Industrial Strategy takes a truly interdisciplinary approach, not just focusing on STEM disciplines but also recognising the crucial role the social sciences play in driving growth and productivity. Our interdisciplinary approach with colleagues in the physical, medical and life sciences is of paramount importance to the University as we work with industry partners to tackle the challenges of the Industrial Strategy.
