Programme and project management

Introduction

This module introduces you to the history of programme management and to the theoretical concepts which underpin it. You will examine the role of programme management in the implementation of strategy and in the implementation of significant change programmes in public services around the world. The module will include theoretical and critical perspectives on different approaches to programme management, and you will also be introduced to the practical issues of managing programmes and projects.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module you should be able to:

  • Explain the principles of programme management and to apply an appropriate range of theories, techniques and frameworks to project and programme management.
  • Analyse the strengths and limitations of different approaches to programme management and their suitability for different types of programmes, e.g. complex inter-agency and partnership-based projects or single agency or single service projects.
  • Manage the multiple human factors which impact on project and programme management: business, financial and political.
  • Apply the necessary skills to enable the successful management of programmes and projects from design through risk assessment, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
