Managing in a Political Environment

Introduction

This module focuses on the importance of political leadership in public service management. The module introduces you to the main theoretical perspectives on political leadership and the role of officers/civil servants, and how these have developed and relate to the dynamics of the management and governance of public services. The module includes research on international perspectives about political leadership. You will study the roles of public sector managers in supporting political leadership, including the provision of expert advice, and the skills needed to manage the interface between political and managerial leadership.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module you should be able to:

  • Explain the theories and concepts which distinguish political and professional leadership
  • Apply the skills required to operate in the interface environment
  • Explain the necessary professional competences required to develop and maintain effective relationships with politicians
