International Financial Statement Analysis

Module description

The course aims to take the analysis of financial accounts beyond simple ratio analysis.  A knowledge of accounting is assumed.  The different models that can be used to value shares are considered, together with different approaches to credit analysis.  The course provides an understanding of the relationship between information and the movement of share prices.  Each lecture will be backed up by classes which will be concerned with a practical issue.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be:

  • familiar with the usefulness and limitations of financial statements.
  • able to read “between the lines” of financial accounts and to understand the footnotes.
  • aware of the techniques used in aggressive earnings management.
  • able to link the analysis of financial statements with the valuation of shares.
