The International Accounting and Finance MSc, on offer since the 1960s, encompasses accounting in its international, public and private contexts, corporate financial management, private sector investment and foreign exchange markets.

It aims to give you a deep knowledge of the theoretical and empirical literature that provides the background to understanding changes and innovations in accounting and finance, where you will also acquire a range of skills that can be used to solve real-world problems.

By combining with Kaplan Financial to offer the ACCA this 16 month pathway enables you to leave the University of Birmingham with an MSc and the completion of four professional ACCA modules to achieve your ACCA Professional status; Advanced Performance Management,  Advanced Financial Management, Strategic Business Reporting and Business Leader .  This is a unique programme on offer exclusively to students of the International Accounting and Finance MSc at Birmingham.

When you apply for this MSc you must upload a transcript showing modules studied and mark achieved to date. If you have not yet completed your Bachelor’s degree, please ensure that you also upload a transcript or an official document which shows the modules you are studying in your final year, and any marks achieved so far.

ACCA Professional 

This 16-month pathway includes tuition from Kaplan Financial for four ACCA professional modules; Advanced Performance Management, Advanced Financial Management, Strategic Business Reporting and Strategic Business Leader. Upon completion of these modules you will be fully ACCA Professional qualified.

The MSc International Accounting and Finance Programme is accredited by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), which means you will be awarded exemptions from certain papers of the ACCA examinations upon successful completion of the programme. Companies such as HSBC, BP, Unilever and Deloitte visit the School to run workshops and business games, ensuring that you have the opportunity to put the theory you have learned into practice. Particular programmes also offer the ability to obtain first-hand experience in the form of either work placements abroad or UK based consultancy projects with companies such as Jaguar, Aston Villa Football Club and Cadbury.

Fees and funding

Please note that the following additional fees apply to this programme:

  • An additional £5078.80 is payable to Kaplan Financial for ACCA tuition
  • Additional examination fees are payable directly to the ACCA
  • A £200 administration fee is payable to the University of Birmingham per examination taken

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree (2:1 or higher) or postgraduate diploma from an UK university or equivalent.  The degree must be in a relevant subject and applicants must have studied and achieved a mark equivalent to a 2.1 at bachelor’s level in Intermediate (or above) level of Financial Accounting, Principles of Accounting, Corporate Finance or Financial Management or International Financial Management, and at least two other modules in Accounting and Finance, such as Auditing, Taxation, Financial Statement Analysis, Investments etc.

Standard English language requirements apply (IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band).

If you are currently studying at a Chinese university, please view our specific entry requirements including our list of acceptable universities for further study at Birmingham.

For the ACCA pathway students must have completed the nine ACCA foundation exams and be able to provide proof of this upon applying by assessment OR by exemption based on study for your undergraduate degree or otherwise.
