Module aims and objectives

Managers and leaders working in organisations face issues and dilemmas on a daily basis. This module will demonstrate to students how they should proceed, how organisations they work in affect their decisions and the implications of their decisions. The module will also cover topics such as organisation structures, the difference between leading and managing, governance of organisations, including the role and composition of the board, organisational culture, particularly the differences in national cultures, stakeholders and their expectations, corporate social responsibility and ethics, dealing with complexity and the implications this has for behaviour, leadership and managing change.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to:

  • Understand the importance of corporate governance, social responsibility and ethical behaviour in a dynamic world.
  • Explain the way in which leadership, organisational structure and culture support and enhance strategy formulation.
  • Explain the role of the board, non executive directors and evaluate the increasing problems associated with multi-agency.
  • Critically evaluate the importance of stakeholder management in the overall governance of an organisation.

Assessment

2,500 word individual assignment (75%) and group presentation (25%).
