Our MSc Research Insights in Marketing course is designed to further advance your understanding of cutting-edge theories and contemporary research methods and practices in the fields of marketing and consumption.

The world of marketing is fluid, with theory, innovations and practice constantly evolving. To thrive in this industry, high-level problem solving, analytical and communication skills are essential. Through taking the MSc Research Insights in Marketing, you will develop research skills and gain insight to the marketplace and consumer behaviour, enabling you to take informed decisions, make exciting innovations and stay ahead of the competition.

Our modules cover topics including innovation in marketing theory, contemporary social theories, responsibility in marketing and advanced research methodologies. You will gain the knowledge needed for a career as an expert marketer at the forefront of emerging trends in the marketplace.

By end of the first semester you must decide to follow a dedicated research stream in the second semester before proceeding to compulsory Dissertation (60 credits). The various streams and allowable module combinations are as follows:

Postgraduate Taught Scholarships in Birmingham Business School

International students can often gain funding through overseas research scholarships, Commonwealth scholarships or their home government;  find out more about finance for international students.

Postgraduate Loans for Masters students

UK and EU students (with settled or pre-settled status) looking to pursue a Masters programme in the UK can apply for a non-means-tested loan from the British government via the Student Loans Company (SLC).

1 July 2022 is the application deadline for international students applying through the student route who wish to study in the United Kingdom. We are not able to consider applications for 2022 made after this date. The deadline for Home students is 31 August 2022.

Our Standard Requirements

Applicants will have an Honours degree (2:1 or higher) or postgraduate diploma or equivalent in marketing or business and management, although applicants with related Honours degrees may be considered.


International Requirements

International Students

Standard English language requirements apply (IELTS 7.0 with no less than 6.5 in any band).

IELTS 7.0 with no less than 6.5 in any band is equivalent to:

  • TOEFL: 95 overall with no less than 22 in any band
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): PTE Academic 76 with no less than 67 in all four skills
  • Cambridge English (exams taken from 2015): Advanced or Proficiency – minimum overall score of 185, with no less than 176 in any component

The MSc Research Insights in Marketing programme is for graduates who are familiar with key marketing principles and practice and want to pursue a degree focusing on highly innovative research in marketing. The course aims to develop your critical and analytic skills, giving you the ability ‘to do something’ with data at an advanced level and in a creative and imaginative way.

We focus on high level creative problem solving by synthesising information and bringing together different perspectives on a problem using advanced research and communication skills. You can choose to specialise in quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods.

The postgraduate Future Leaders Certificate, run by the Business School’s Careers in Business team, is an extra-curricular programme which is designed to prepare our MSc students for the potential impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). This is intended to equip students with the skills they need to stand out and succeed within this increasingly competitive market. As part of this, students will be encouraged to increase their awareness of responsible business and ethical considerations.

The Certificate culminates in our Gold Award, where students will receive expert coaching, mentoring and industry insight, and work on a group project set by multi-national companies which place high importance on their social and corporate responsibility.
