Over 90% of global energy budget surrounds thermal energy conversion, transportation and storage. Thermal energy is at the heart of the whole energy chain providing a main linkage between the primary and secondary energy sources. This area is seen to grow significantly in the coming decades.
This module will equip students with technical skills to make positive management decisions in this multi-faceted thermal energy industry by developing an acute understanding of the influences and associated impacts of thermal energy in context to the overall energy industry.
The module will cover fundamental concepts of thermal energy and the generation of such, thermal energy conversion processes, transmission and storage of thermal energy, and applications of thermal energy.
By the end of the module you will be able to
- Understand the fundamental theory underpinning thermal energy generation, conversion, transportation and storage
- Critically discuss the methods, processes and unit operations for thermal energy generation, conversion, transportation and storage
- Understand and implement design principles for thermal energy conversion, transportation and storage processes
- Gain insight into and authoritatively discuss the state-of-the-art developments in energy materials, devices and system technologies
Teaching and assessment:
Assessment: Coursework (40%), 2 hour examination (60%)
Reassessment: 100% coursework
