Railway Traction and Electrification Systems

Module Title - Railway Traction and Electrification Systems
Number of credits - 10

Module description

This module covers all aspects of motive power, from diesel-electric propulsion through to pulse width converter systems. Individual lectures deal with the basic physics of traction, friction braking and electrical (regenerative) braking systems, DC and AC motor design and traction supplies, power converters, and train detection.

Also covered are DC and AC traction supplies, including protection and feed systems, notably, the use of booster transformers and the autotransformer supply system.
