Intervention and Curriculum Management for Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD)

This module will cover the intervention and curriculum management for dyslexia/literacy difficulties via the following content:

  • Principles for intervention in literacy difficulties/dyslexia
  • Theories underpinning effective intervention: the role of instructional psychology and mastery learning
  • The evidence base for literacy interventions
  • Evaluating impact
  • How to design and implement individual teaching, including multi sensory teaching and the role of ICT
  • The role of the learning environment
  • Addressing the study skill needs of individuals with literacy difficulties, with particular emphasis on the needs of pupils aged 14-19 and of adults in FE/HE
  • Addressing the social and emotional needs of individuals with literacy difficulties, including counselling techniques for use with students in continuing education
  • Coaching and consultation with colleagues in order to promote inclusion of and provision for individuals with literacy difficulties.This will include examination of approaches to consultation with a focus on the application of the Egan Skilled Helper model
  • Effective group instruction: Direct Instruction small group teachingWorking within the ‘Waves of Intervention’ modelSupporting higher level study and writing skills for FE/HE


A written assignment of 4,000 words (100%) and a professional practice portfolio.
