Personal and Professional Skills in Educational Management

This module is designed for those students who wish to develop skills which will help them to attain and sustain an effective managerial role in an educational institution. This will be facilitated through reflection and discussion on students’ own experiences and strengths, and through examination of literature on career development and skills. There will be an emphasis on the management of relationships, and the management of oneself.  While the development of these skills is an important outcome of the module, we will also critique such approaches from cultural and gender perspectives.

While the word ‘manager’ tends to suggest the institutional level, you need not be in managerial positions, or even want to be, or indeed in an education career, in order to benefit from the module.  Anyone can profit from reflection on these skills, as they apply equally well to teaching – or to almost any role of responsibility.  There is also considerable overlap between the personal and the professional, and this will be explored throughout the module.
