The module takes the commissioning cycle used in many health care systems as its focus. It will introduce students to the three key areas of planning, procuring and monitoring health care services. The module is underpinned by teaching on the critical appraisal of evidence and the use of economic appraisal in health settings. Particular emphasis is placed on Health Needs Assessment and the ways in which this can be carried out. Students are exposed in particular to these concepts as they apply to health care delivery. The module is delivered by a mixture of internal academic experts and external experts experienced in service delivery.
By the end of the module you should be able to:
1. Describe the commissioning cycle in the context of health care commissioning
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practice of health care needs assessment and its application in public health practice
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of economic appraisal of health care
4. Critically analyse health care policy implementation, in particular through the prioritisation of services and interventions
5. Demonstrate an understanding of and be able to analyse critical steps in service design or redesign such as service specifications, care pathways and models of care
6. Evaluate and audit health services to assure and improve quality
