Module description

The aim of this module is to introduce students to materials that can be used in the human body. The following subjects will be covered in the module:

  • Natural tissues in the human body - materials and structure: Skeletal tissues
  • General considerations for biomaterials - biocompatible, sterile, bioactive, biological interfaces
  • Biomaterials for use in orthopaedics: joint replacement, fracture fixation
  • Biomaterials for use in dentistry- bioactive glasses and glass ionomer cements
  • General aspects of Tissue engineering 

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Understand the structure of natural tissues
  • Describe the general requirements for synthetic biomaterials
  • Select and justify appropriate biomaterials for use in orthopaedic medical    devices
  • Understand the concept of tissue engineering and its current limitation
