Module description

The aim of the module is to introduce students to a number of important materials science topics in the field of sustainable energy generation and storage. The following will be covered in the module: electrical energy transmission; materials for solar cells; materials for wind and marine turbines; geothermal energy; energy storage materials; and materials for carbon dioxide separation and capture.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Appreciate and describe the use of functional materials in a range of energy generation and storage technologies;
  • Understand the key materials challenges that need to be overcome, in order to make viable/ improve the competitiveness of a range of energy generation and storage technologies;
  • Understand and describe the materials fabrication, characterization techniques that are required for the development of energy generation and storage technologies;
  • Describe how the energy generation and storage technologies studied, can fit into a number of proposed sustainable energy systems.
