Your first weeks as a distance learner

There are some key things that you will need to do prior to starting your course.

There are many different situations and courses that distance learners belong to. Whether you're studying online, on the other side of the world, occassionally visit campus or never visit in person, there are key things which you must do before beginning your course.

Complete your Online Registration

 All students must complete their Online Registration to become a student at the University. It is best to do this as soon as possible, before your course is due to start.

Having problems registering?

University ID Card

Some distance learners will not automatically receive a University ID Card, but you can request one be sent to you. Find out more about ID Cards for students who are not normally based on campus.

Welcome Week

As a Distance Learner, you are encouraged to attend Welcome Week if you are living in the UK. Welcome Beginning on Monday 24 September it's a great opportunity to explore campus, meet support teams and ensure you are fully prepared to begin your course.

Virtual Campus Tour

If you live oversees, can't make it to Welcome Week or won't get a chance to visit our stunning campus, why not take advantage of our virtual campus tour. Explore campus, take a look at your department and watch videos about our campus all from the comfort of your own home.

Student Support

We have a wide range of support services available to you throughout your studies. From welfare to disability and learning support, we can provide advice and guidance. 

IT Support

As a distance learner, you'll likely rely on technology to stay connected with lecturers, your peers and the wider University. Our IT services can assist you with any issues you may experience.

Study Skills Support

You can benefit from a range of study skills support that the University offers. Discover our online resources sycg as our Self-Enrol courses and Acadmic Skills Centre.

Induction activities and events

If you are able to attend Welcome Week, your School or College will run Induction and Welcome activities alongside central activities. Information can be found in the events pages of the Welcome website

Once you are registered

Once you are registered with us, you will have access to the University’s online facilities.

You will be able to begin using your University email address and the MyBham portal.

 

Your University login details

Your username and password are emailed to you when you are invited to complete Online Registration, giving you access to your emails and the University network.

You can change your password using our online Password Manager.

The Guild of Students will also run Welcome events such as the Societies Fair and Sports Fair, which can all be found in the events calendar above.
