Research in American and Canadian Studies

Our centre is one of the most dynamic in Britain. Our staff are at the forefront of research in American and Canadian Studies. Our multi-disciplinary approach links history, literature, politics and cultural studies to produce innovative and challenging work.

Recent and forthcoming publications include Rachel Sykes’s The Quiet Contemporary American Novel, Tom Cutterham’s A Very Promising Appearance”: Credit, Honor, and Deception in the Emerging Market for American Debt, 1784–92 and Gentlemen Revolutionaries: Power and Justice in the New American Republic, Nathan Cardon’s  A Dream of the Future: Race, Empire, and Modernity at the Atlanta and Nashville World’s Fairs, and Rona Cran’s Material language for protest: collage in Allen Ginsberg’s ‘Wichita Vortex Sutra’ Collage in Twentieth-Century Art, Literature and Culture: Joseph Cornell, William Burroughs, Frank O’Hara, and Bob Dylan.
