Lead Supervisor

Dr James O'Shea

Research Summary

Jack joined the Centre for Doctoral Training in Fuel Cells and Their Fuels in September 2018 as a doctoral researcher. He is using NAP-XPS to research surfaces that can perform direct photocatalytic water splitting, with a focus on solid-state materials. Based at the University of Nottingham, his project is supervised by Dr James O’Shea and Dr Richard Campion.

Jack is funded by the EPSRC CDT  in Fuel Cells and their fuels: EP/L015749/1.

Qualifications

MSci (Hons) in Natural Sciences, University of Nottingham (2018)

Biography

Jack graduated in 2018 from the University of Nottingham with a masters degree (MSci) in Natural Sciences. Initially comprising of a combination of chemistry, maths and physics, his course focussed primarily on physics towards the end. During his undergraduate, he completed a diverse set of projects. These ranged from interdisciplinary projects involving biology, chemistry and physics to his dissertation in excitation transport between atoms.

Research

Jack is researching materials that are capable of splitting water for hydrogen generation, using the novel technique of near Submitambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS). He aims to gain an understanding of the mechanisms that occur at a materials surface, potentially to develop new materials. His primary interests are in semiconductors, XPS and renewable energies.

Other activities

Jack has previously volunteered at the YMCA, helping to run outdoor activities such as climbing, kayaking, canoeing and caving. He has been involved in his University kayaking sports club for several years.
