Research summary

Osaze Omoregbe is a doctoral researcher at the Centre for Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Research. He is currently working on the synthesis of highly efficient catalysts for the conversion of carbon dioxide into synthetic natural gas. Osaze joined this centre in January 2019 after securing a fully funded scholarship by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, Nigeria in 2018. Prior to this, he completed his Master’s degree at Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Malaysia in 2017 with a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering.

Biography

Osaze Omoregbe is a researcher with keen interests in environmental protection through innovations in renewable energy, hydrogen energy and carbon utilisation.

In 2011, he completed his undergraduate degree. During the final year of this degree, he was given a project on the mechanism of atmospheric photooxidation of toluene. The mechanism was studied using both the kinetics of the reactions taking place and the thermodynamics of such reactions. This study was necessary because the photooxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene benzene and xylenes when emitted into the atmosphere significantly contributes to the formation of urban photochemical smog and other environmental and health concerns. Through this study, Osaze gained first-hand knowledge of how to conduct research and became more interested in studies that focus on environmental protection, clean energy sources and technologies.

After graduation from his undergraduate degree, Osaze partook in a compulsory one-year national youth service corps (NYSC). In 2013, he was offered a Graduate Assistant job in the Department of Chemical Engineering, the University of Benin after the completion of NYSC.

He worked for two years in the capacity of a Graduate Assistant before securing a scholarship in 2015 to undertake a Master by research program in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Malaysia, Pahang. His research was majorly on dry reforming of methane using silica-supported nickel catalyst (Ni/SBA-15). During this degree, Osaze gained experience in techniques for catalysts synthesis and characterization. He also learnt how to design an experiment and properly analyse experimental results.

After the completion of his MSc program in 2017, Osaze went back to his home country (Nigeria) to continue his lecturing job at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Benin.

In 2018, he secured another scholarship to undertake a PhD degree program at the University of Birmingham, UK and joined the Centre for Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Research group in January 2019. He is currently working on the synthesis of suitable catalysts for the efficient conversion of carbon dioxide into synthetic natural gas. Other studies include the determination of optimum conditions for high product yield and reactor modification for optimum carbon dioxide conversion.

His future goal is to join a research group or company that is interested in renewable energy, hydrogen energy, and minimising greenhouse gas emission from fossil fuel usage, carbon utilisation, and energy policy.

Other activities

 

Osaze enjoys reaching out to larger audience through his YouTube channel known as “MyEdugateway”. The main goal of his channel is to show people more explicit ways of doing some technical stuffs such as the use of various computer applications and laboratory practices.

He has also been a Maths volunteer with Action Tutoring since 2019.

Outside academics, Osaze enjoys traveling and sightseeing.
