The School of Chemistry has undertaken world-leading research for over a century and remains at the fore-front of scientific discovery, as has been recognised in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, where all of our research outputs have been graded as internationally recognised, with over 95% being classed as internationally excellent or world-leading.

We have a broad research portfolio covering three outward-facing research themes: Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery; Imaging in Chemistry and Biomedicine and Materials Chemistry and Energy. These research themes are underpinned by four core research units: Biomolecular, Supramolecular and Nanoscale Chemistry; Molecular Synthesis and Catalysis; Interactions, Interfaces and Sensing and Solid State Chemistry. Our research is funded from a broad range of sources, including EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC, Marie Curie and EU research programmes, the Leverhulme Trust and industry. The School also hosts two Centres for Doctoral Training in the Physical Sciences of Imaging in the Biomedical Sciences (Sci Phy) and the Physical Sciences for Health.
