High class Hydraulic Engineering research has been undertaken at Birmingham for more than thirty years. As a result over 600 complete sets of primary velocity and boundary shear stress data for flow in straight prismatic open channels or ducts of various cross sections and roughness distributions exist.
These data, together with other data obtained from experimental work on the former Flood Channel Facility are freely available and described fully at www.flowdata.bham.ac.uk.
Current research activities of the Hydraulic Engineering group include:
The hydraulics laboratory has dedicated equipment and flumes for undertaking cutting-edge research in the areas of pipe-flow, open channel flow, sediment transport processes and wave mechanics.
