To mark Professor Robert Swanson`s retirement CREMS (the Centre for Reformation and Early Modern Studies) and CESMA (the Centre for the Study of the Middle Ages) are hosting a symposium on the late-medieval Church.

Robert Swanson has played a leading role in shaping our understanding of the doctrines and practices of the late medieval church and their broader implications. Over the course of nearly forty years at the University of Birmingham, Robert has published a wide range of books and articles on a wide variety of aspects of the late medieval period ranging from important works on the twelfth century renaissance to books on indulgences in Late Medieval England and Europe. He has been instrumental in the research culture of both CREMS and CESMA at the University of Birmingham.

This symposium seeks to bring together some of the most important scholars working on different aspects of the late medieval and early sixteenth-century church.
