  • There are currently around 100,000 chemicals used by manufacturers of consumer goods that are released into the environment, yet fewer than ten per cent have ever been tested for their potential health effects on humans and ecosystems, and only in a rudimentary way.
  • As more products are introduced to markets every year, there is now great demand from regulatory authorities and industries for new technologies that can quickly, cheaply and effectively measure the possible toxicities of these chemicals.
  • An EU directive dictates that all chemicals used in one tonne (or greater) quantities in Europe must be evaluated for potential toxicity by 2018.
