Europe: A Progressive Continent?

On 12 October 2012 the EU was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised the EU’s decades’ long historical role in promoting reconciliation and peace. Reactions to the award have been mixed, ranging from complete endorsement to bafflement to outright dismissal.

At a time of strong economic and social tensions, when “divided Europe” appears to be the catchphrase, the time seems right to pause and reflect on what Europe’s contribution to progress has been throughout the past, the present and what it might be in the future.

The conference offers PhD students from both UoB and further afield the opportunity to present their work on a number of related themes. In addition, participants will also have to opportunity to take part in a number of skills sessions, which will provide valuable information and advice designed to improve their employability in academic and other careers.

We are also very pleased to welcome Gisela Stuart, MP for Birmingham Edgbaston, as our keynote speaker.
