NTU-UoB-IAS 2This programme aims to attract outstanding early and mid-career researchers from global leading institutions, operating at the cutting edge of their disciplines to work collaboratively with colleagues at the University of Birmingham UK (UoB) and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU).

Purpose

This programme aims to attract outstanding early and mid-career researchers from global leading institutions, operating at the cutting edge of their disciplines to work collaboratively with colleagues at the University of Birmingham UK (UoB) and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU).

The Fellowships are intended to:

  • nurture research which focuses  on new and existing areas which are timely and relevant to national and international priorities and cross disciplinary boundaries
  • forge meaningful research collaborations between academics at the two sites in Birmingham and Singapore

Timing

Fellows would be expected to stay for up to six weeks in Singapore and six weeks in Birmingham over a period of one year. 

Resources

The Institutes will:

  • arrange the appropriate invitation and visa
  • arrange and cover costs of the Fellow travelling to Birmingham and Singapore from their home institution
  • arrange and cover the cost of self-catering accommodation
  • organise access to Library and IT services
  • provide a small fund of up to £1000/SGD 1800 against which research expenses for the visit may be claimed. The funds will be agreed to allow support for the research proposal, workshops and public events
  • support networking through meetings and events across the Universities
  • organise and support agreed public events and workshops
  • work with the fellow and host to plan implementation of the objectives and dissemination plan

The Application

Applicants should send a CV, details of their proposed research project (maximum length 1000 words), a publication as a sample of their written work and the names of two referees to Sue Gilligan.

The research application should:

  • identify the particular research strengths at NTU Singapore and Birmingham that would contribute to the success of the project proposal
  • indicate likely outcomes from the collaboration, together with a dissemination plan with specifics that will be delivered during the fellowship and subsequently (e.g. publications, new research projects) which will demonstrate the value of the visit to the academic community and external stakeholders and organisations

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee chaired by the Directors of the Institutes of Advanced Studies at NTU and UoB, and representatives of colleagues in relevant disciplines.

Selection

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Academic excellence and standing against career stage of the proposed Vanguard Fellow;

Please note that we seek early/mid-career researchers would normally be within 15 years of achieving their PhD, who hold a research post in academia, industry, charity, arts or other organisations, which are equivalent to academic post of Lecturer or above, or who hold an individual Principal Investigator Fellowship.

  • The extent to which the visit has the potential to enhance new or existing collaborative research or pump prime new research areas.

The Fellow will be expected to:

  • Participate in IAS activities and engage with staff and research students in relevant Departments, Schools and Colleges at the University of Birmingham and at Nanyang Technological University;
  • Present an IAS seminar and or public lecture;
  • Write a short report on activities and achievements against objectives outlined at application stage (within 6 months of the end of the fellowship);
  • Acknowledge IAS support in any publications resulting from the period of the fellowship;
  • Become a member of the cohort of the UoB-NTU IAS alumni group.
