Workshop leader: Dr Sheba Saeed

This workshop will comprise of a number of presentations from both academics and practitioners discussing the issue of begging with a superdiverse angle incorporating different disciplines, ranging from social policy to law, film, migration and entrepreneurship. The workshop will begin with a presentation on the begging situation in Northern Europe, focusing on legalities surrounding begging in three geographical contexts. A discussion will ensue as to the different actors involved in both the practice of begging, and those who are making attempts to assist them. This will set the context for a series of consequent presentations using different lenses to discuss the issue of begging.

Nominated discussants will reflect on what has been presented which will be followed by time for questions within each session. The penultimate presentation will comprise a break out session in groups where key issues will be discussed.

The key issues to be explored are:

  • The complexities surrounding laws associated with begging?
  • What can be done to assist those who are begging using a multi and interdisciplinary approach?

Participants include:

  • Dr Ricky Joseph
  • Professor Kiran Trehan
  • Dr Nando Sigona
  • Ms Carole Fox
  • Sister Sabina, SiFA Fireside
