WORKSHOP LEADER
Professor Mantha Phanikumar, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Michigan State University.

Protecting the public from exposure to contaminated waterways is the primary goal of beach management which is based on directives for recreational water quality issued by agencies such as the US EPA, WHO and the European Parliament. A key aspect of beach management is informing the public of changing water quality conditions at beaches in a timely manner. Extensive monitoring and modelling of water quality and coastal processes have led to the evolution of “Beach Science” – the science that cuts across several disciplines including hydrology, limnology, microbiology/metagenomics and meteorology. In this talk Professor Phanikumar will provide an overview of the ongoing research in beach science at Michigan State University, with an emphasis on how monitoring and modelling can be combined to gain new insights and to provide timely information to the public.

All are welcome, refreshments will be served after the seminar.
