intro to ICA

PANEL – Dr David Gange (History), Dr Irina Kuznetsova (Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences), Dr Katrien Pype (African Studies and Anthropology), Dr Alastair Wilson (Philosophy), Professor Mike Hannon (Director, IAS)

The panel focuses on the Intercontinental Academia interdisciplinary project (ICA), and in particular on the in-progress 3rd ICA on the topic of Laws: Rigidity and Dynamics. Supported by the University of Birmingham’s Institute of Advanced Studies and to be hosted here in Birmingham in 2019 following a meeting in Singapore in 2018, the 3rd ICA is a global network of early/mid-career scholars working together on paradigm-shifting cross-disciplinary research on all aspects of the concept of a law.

The panel consists of five University of Birmingham academics with first-hand experiences of an ICA – three Fellows participating in the current edition, one Fellow from the first edition on Time, and the Director of the UoB IAS. The aim of the panel is to reflect on different approaches to interdisciplinary work, and the challenges and opportunities offered by a major project such as an ICA. Each panel member will talk for 5 minutes about their personal experiences of interdisciplinary work at the ICA and how it enhances and connects with their research, followed by a 20-minute Q&A with the audience.

This panel will take place at 15:40 in the Great Hall as part of Birmingham New Horizons 2018 Research Conference. Now in its second year, the University Research Conference brings together academic and professional services staff working on ground breaking research at UoB. The day will offer a range of sessions designed to explore the delivery of effective and impactful research at the University and beyond.
