Internal Funds – Pump Priming for Research
The University of Birmingham offers several internal funding streams that will help people pump prime their research proposals. All opportunities can be viewed on the intranet and include:
MRC Confidence in Concept (CiC)
- 6-12 months, £50-100k
- Target transition between fundamental - translational research
- Short EOI - full application with support from project group.
MRC Proximity to Discovery (PtD) - Industry engagement fund
- Rapid Response Mobility (travel and accommodation)
- Exchange and Explore, clearly defined exploratory project to create preliminary data to build towards a collaborative application (CiC or other) – up to £10K
Pump Priming for Research
Up to £5k Is available to help early- and mid-career researchers to generate the strong, novel data and high-impact publications that will provide a firm foundation for future grant proposals. There are two deadlines per year to support ‘Preliminary Data awards’ - to help generate preliminary results to support a grant or fellowship application. Please see intranet page for next deadline.
Wellcome ISSF
- Critical Data Award – up to £25k allowing researchers to obtain preliminary data to support a proposal
- Accelerator Fellowship – for Early Career Researchers
- Continuity Award – to support people returning to research after career breaks
Internal Funds – Travel and Developing Collaborations
Travel International Engagement Fund
- Key criteria: academic excellence; potential outputs; potential to enhance existing collaboration or pump prime new areas; furthering UoB’s international reputation; value for money.
- Priority given to 5 strategic regions: Brazil, China, India, North America, Europe
Travel and Developing Collaborations
Up to £5k Is available to help early- and mid-career researchers to generate the strong, novel data and high-impact publications that will provide a firm foundation for future grant proposals. There are two deadlines per year to support ‘Travel awards’ - to enable educational or collaborative visits to other research laboratories. Please see intranet page for next deadline.
Wellcome ISSF – Global Mobility Award
- Must align with ISSF scheme – This focus on critical career stages
- Anywhere in the world – LMICs encouraged
- Up to £10,000
