Abstract:
Dr Holmes-Henderson will examine how the Classical rhetorical method can be used successfully to underpin and enrich school learners' development of speaking and listening skills. She will demonstrate how, through the construction and deconstruction of speech, learners can become adept at articulating eloquently their own positions while engaging critically with the views of others. By engaging with the multiple conceptions of citizenship outlined in Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence, she will investigate how Classical rhetoric can contribute to their fulfilment.
