Continuing professional development

Background

The UK and many other countries have recognised nuclear skills shortages. The University of Birmingham is collaborating with other specialist nuclear education and research institutes in the UK to deliver programmes that help to overcome this challenge.  These include programmes such as the Nuclear Technology Education Consortium (NTEC) and the Nuclear Engineering Doctorate Scheme.

Courses

The Birmingham Centre for Nuclear Education and Research is built on a long established foundation of research excellence and teaching in nuclear physics and engineering.  The University has delivered the longest established Physics and Technology of Nuclear Reactors course in the UK, currently educating over 35 postgraduates a year.  The modular course is steered and sponsored by almost 20 companies and these companies expose the postgraduates to industrial research challenges as part of their education leading to enhanced skills and employability.

With the development of a new MSc programme in Radioactive Waste Management and Decommissioning and an undergraduate programme in the Physics and Materials of Nuclear Engineering, the Centre is well placed to provide tailored continuing professional development courses for industry.
