The staff at the Institute of Applied Health Research make a significant contribution to undergraduate and graduate medical education in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. 

The Institute also has an extensive teaching and learning programme aimed at building research capacity in our four defined themes and providing skills for people already working in the health sector. These include post-graduate taught courses, research degrees and short courses. Master courses in Public Heath, Health Economics, Clinical Trials and Respiratory Medicine are offered, enabling graduates to become leaders in their respective fields. 

The Institute of Applied Health Research is passionate about delivering world leading education as well as outstanding research. We offer a variety of postgraduate education opportunities including research and taught programmes suitable for a wide range of people working in health and other occupations. Our undergraduate programmes include teaching on MBChB in Medicine, MBChB in Medicine and Surgery. In addition, IAHR staff contributes to UG teaching for the wider university.

Intercalated Undergraduate Study


The intercalated Population Sciences and Humanities intercalated BMedSc degree programme is administered by IAHR and comprises of several individual streams. IAHR is responsible for:

Research Fellowships

We welcome new researchers to the University of Birmingham and support our existing researchers to launch their independent careers by applying for Fellowship funding.
