2016
Dr Theresa Blume joined the University under the auspices of the Institute of Advanced Studies, Distinguished Visiting Fellows scheme.
Dr Blume leads the Hillslope and Ecohydrology research group at the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), Potsdam. During two visits this Spring, Theresa will be working with Dr Stefan Krause and the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR).
2015
BIFoR was delighted to have three visiting fellows during 2015. They joined us under the auspices of the University’s Institute of Advanced Studies. These visits were without doubt a huge success and the visiting fellows are still regularly in touch.
Professor David Ellsworth and Dr Kristine Crous joined us from the forest FACE facility at the Hawkesbury Institute of the Environment.
Professor David Ellsworth leads the HIE forest-FACE experiment and is a leading environmental biologist with a world-wide reputation.
The Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) is forging close links with other world-leading institutes of forest research, including the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment (HIE). Close links between BIFoR and HIE are especially important because these two institutes will run the only examples of forest-scale Free-Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) experiments for the next decade.
Dr Debbie Hemming joined us from the Met Office where she is Scientific Manager for the Vegetation-Climate Interactions group. Her group is focussed on improving the understanding and modelling of vegetation in the climate/earth system.
Deborah’s background integrates ecosystem research and climate/earth-system modelling, with the focus of improving understanding of ecosystem functioning and the potential impacts of environmental changes on ecosystem services. She completed a PhD on ‘Stable isotopes in tree rings: Biosensors of environmental change’ at the University of Cambridge Plant Sciences department, followed by post-doctoral research on vegetation-climate interactions in arid systems at University of Arizona, USA, and Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel.
