Challenges and Possibilities of Research on Autism Spectrum Disorder in Brazil: An Overview
Abstract
In Brazil, the diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is late in some regions of the country. There is a lack of standardized national programs for the monitoring of children's mental health and failures in training and clinical practice of paediatricians to detect developmental delays and signs of ASD. The shortage of specialized public services for ASD diagnosis, the lack of specific funding for autism research as well as well-trained investigators/clinicians and mental health services for autistic adults: these are some of the main shortcomings for autism research in Brazilian context.   Starting with an overview about the Brazilian education and mental health system the presentation will discuss some initiatives of the Mackenzie Research Center for Childhood and Adolescence to overcome the challenges for research on ASD. We also prospect possibilities to develop cross-cultural studies in autism. \n
