Governance and Institutional Arrangements

The broader research agenda for WMREDI is to understand the relative impact of various interventions and investments for regional economic growth, sustainability and the reduction of social inequality in the West Midlands and the UK.

Projects in this research theme focus on decision making on investments in large infrastructures (hospital, health science, data centres, transport, etc.), place-based leadership analysis (smart specialisation), the governance of the regional skills ecosystem and the role of universities within it, and the mapping of institutional arrangements and decision making and ability to act at different levels.

Led by Charlotte Hoole, this project aims to identify institutional and organisational arrangements at the regional level that tend to lead to the 'good' management of policy trade-offs associated with increasing productivity, and to make recommendations to policy makers based on this.

The Relationship Between Governance Structures, Policy Levers and Inclusive Growth Outcomes

Led by Ben Brittain, this project will map the regional governance structures, investigate the policy enabling structures and levers that are embedded within those structures and then analyse the resulting effect on inclusive growth outcomes.
