Centre for the Study of North America research seminars

Queer and Now Reading Group

To mark the year of the fiftieth anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act, Queer & Now is a reading group dedicated to queer theory and LGBTQ writing and culture. Queer & Now brings together academic staff and graduate students at the University of Birmingham in order to discuss recent publications pertinent to the fields of queer studies and beyond.

Our first meeting took place in February 2017 in celebration of LGBT History Month in anticipation of a talk by Professor Heather Love at the Centre for Contemporary Literature & Culture. The group will meet twice each semester for the duration of 2017.

Queer & Now is convened by Dr Angus Connell Brown. Please email him for details of future meetings.

Study States

Study States is a reading group and support network for postgraduates working in any area of American Studies, at any level, based at the University of Birmingham. Through friendly, informal reading groups, we discuss exciting readings across all disciplines (literature, music, art, photography, film, etc.) and share our ideas together. We also discuss each other’s works-in-progress; conferences; publications; funding; and everything else in the academic world.

Study States aims to be as inclusive, accessible, and welcoming as possible and we welcome researchers at any stage in their career to get in touch, via email at studystates@gmail.com or our website at https://studystates.home.blog/

New events will be announced here shortly.

For more information about seminars in the Centre please contact the Directors: Nathan Cardon or Rona Cran.
