2016 is the 850th anniversary of the awarding of the market charter to Peter de Bermingham in 1166.
To mark this as the beginning of Birmingham as town and as a commercial entity, Professor Carl Chinn and Dr Malcolm Dick are editing a new history of Birmingham, published by Liverpool University Press. Following the success of other publication marking key anniversaries, such as Liverpool 800 and Belfast 400, this is intended to be a major source of historical reference for the city.
