 This paper takes children’s fiction as emblematic of the significant challenge that ensues whenever radical forms of education are made the subject of representation. Positing an implied connection between formal education and linear narrative form, the paper will discuss a range of writers (including Michele Magorian, Katherine Rundell and David Almond) in order to demonstrate how difficult it is to tell a good story about radical education.\n
 Rex Ferguson is Associate Professor of English Literature at the University of Birmingham. He is the author of Criminal Law and the Modernist Novel (CUP, 2013) and Identification Practices in Twentieth-Century Fiction (OUP, 2021) and co-edited The Art of Identification: Forensics, Surveillance, Identity (PSUP, 2021). \n
